The email is checked against a live verification service at the moment you unlock it, so you are not buying a status that was recorded months ago. An unlocked contact stays unlocked for your whole workspace, forever, at no further cost.
Send unlocked contacts to CSV, or pull them through the API. Exports of contacts you have already unlocked are free and unlimited — you are never charged twice for the same record, and you are never charged for the export itself.
When you unlock a contact, the email is submitted to a live verification service before the response comes back to you. If it returns invalid or disposable, the credit is refunded to your balance automatically in that same request, and the contact is marked so you can skip it. You still get the record; you simply do not pay for a dead address. Verified and catch-all results are charged normally, and so are contacts you unlock again later at no cost, because a repeat unlock is always free.
